According to legend, iolite was used by Vikings to guide them in their travels and it used to be known as the Vikings' Compass. They used iolite slices to protect and reduce from glares when checking the sun's position. Iolite is the gemstone for the twenty- first wedding anniversary. The name given to the stone comes from the Greek word "ios", meaning "violet."
